Word and Character Counter
Count words, characters, characters without whitespace, lines and paragraphs as you type. Includes Unicode-aware character counting where supported.
About this tool
This counter treats whitespace-separated tokens containing letters or numbers as words. It is useful for drafts and text limits, but counts can differ from word processors and services with different rules. Unicode grapheme segmentation is used for characters where your browser supports it.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Whitespace-separated tokens containing a Unicode letter or number count as words. Punctuation-only tokens do not. This is not a linguistic word segmenter for every language.
How are paragraphs and lines counted?
Lines are separated by line breaks. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by one or more blank lines. Empty text has zero lines and paragraphs.
How are emoji counted?
Where Intl.Segmenter is available, visible character groups such as many joined emoji count as one grapheme. Otherwise the counter falls back to Unicode code points and tells you.
